MSI Wind Technology with Mini Laptop and Mini Desktop computer

When comparing the Wind desktop to a traditional PC, the former stands out with two major advantages: size and power consumption. Its dimensions are 300mm by 260mm by 65mm and, for running at full capacity, it only needs 35-watts (a regular PC goes for 250-watts). A system description: 160GB 7200 SATA HDD, Wi-Fi, 7.1-channel audio and built-in TV card.

The mini-laptop computer comes with 2GB of DRAM, 80GB HDD and can connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi 802.11b/g.

At the beginning of April, Hewlett Packard announced the launch of its 2133 Mini-Note. Starting at a base price of $500, it has a nine-inch screen with 1280x768 resolution, weighs about 2 1/2 pounds and comes with an aluminum case and an optional webcam. The computer was outfitted with a 1.2GHz Via processor, 1 GB of RAM and a 120 GB, 5400 RPM hard drive.

In the second half of April, Asustek Computer Inc. unveiled the Eee PC 900, that comes with an 8.9-inch display running at a resolution of 1,024 by 600 pixels, 1GB of memory, Intel UMA graphics card, Intel Mobile CPU, Wifi, VGA out, and SD/MMC slot, a 1.3-megapixel camera and either a 12GB or 20GB solid-state drive (SSD) for storage.

The first MSI Wind laptop computer has been named the U100 and comes with a 10-inch LCD (liquid crystal display) screen, and an LED (light emitting diode) backlight, which saves power and provides a better picture.

The Atom microprocessor on board also helps save power. MSI says Wind can run for 6-hours on the six-cell battery, which is optional on the device. It comes with a three-cell battery standard.

The mini-laptop computer runs Microsoft Windows XP and does not have an optional Linux OS, unlike many of its rivals. Wind can hold 80G bytes of data on its HDD (hard disk drive), holds up to 2G bytes of DRAM and connects wirelessly to the Internet via Wi-Fi 802.11b/g.On Tuesday, at the Computex electronics show, Micro-Star International (MSI) launched the Wind mini-desktop PC and the Wind mini-laptop computer.

The Wind mini-desktop takes a page out of rival Asustek Computer's book. Asustek last week revealed the Eee Box, a mini-desktop PC that has an Atom microprocessor, will come with either a Linux or Windows XP OS, and will begin selling in July for around US$300. The machine takes its name from the popular mini-laptop computer, Eee PC, by Asustek.

Microsoft to Highlight Silverlight, 'Oslo, IBM Partnership At TechEd'

The start of trade has also been delayed on the Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen exchanges for a second consecutive day. But Nordic bourse operator OMX confirmed it had solved the technical problems and trade would start at 1230.

The Oslo stock exchange said that despite the late start, trade would end as normal at 1430 GMT, leaving just two hours to trade.

Microsoft,(NASDAQ:MSFT, HKEx: 4338) is holding its North American TechEd conference in two parts this year as opposed to the one conference it usually holds, with a focus on developers this week in Orlando. Next week the company will hold the conference for IT professionals.

At the show, which begins Tuesday in Orlando, Florida, Microsoft,(NASDAQ:MSFT, HKEx: 4338) will release beta 2 of Silverlight 2, the second full release of Microsoft,(NASDAQ:MSFT, HKEx: 4338)'s application-development and delivery platform for Web-based multimedia. Microsoft,(NASDAQ:MSFT, HKEx: 4338) released the first version of Silverlight last September to compete with Adobe Flash.

The company also will reveal more information about an ambitious project, codenamed Oslo, for adding application-modeling capability across its software -- including its Visual Studio developer tools and System Center network-management software -- to help organizations create and deploy service-oriented architectures (SOAs).

New technologies and development directions aside, TechEd this year is probably more notable because it is where Microsoft,(NASDAQ:MSFT, HKEx: 4338) founder and Chairman Bill Gates [cq] is scheduled to make one of his last public appearances before going part-time at Microsoft,(NASDAQ:MSFT, HKEx: 4338).

Gates, who is scheduled to keynote Tuesday morning, will abandon full-time duties at Microsoft,(NASDAQ:MSFT, HKEx: 4338) at the end of June to focus on his work with The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the philanthropic organization he founded with his wife.

The Oslo bourse said trade would begin at 1230 GMT on Tuesday after technical problems paralysed trade on Nordic stock exchanges on Tuesday.

Curl Adds Runtime Support for Apple MacBook Environments

The vendor is based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Its platform is based on research conducted at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It is owned by Sumisho Computer Systems, a Japanese company that bought it in 2004.

Curl's platform, which is aimed squarely at enterprises, consists of an eponymous programming language, an IDE (integrated development environment) for building applications, and runtimes for executing the programs on client Apple MacBookhines. The new Apple MacBook runtime, available as a free download, is compatible with Power PC and Intel Apple MacBookintoshes running OS 10.4 and higher, Curl said.

"As we watch Apple whittle away at Microsoft's dominant position, it behooves us to start supporting that platform sooner than later," said Richard Monson-Haefel, vice president of developer relations.

He noted that Curl already had runtime support for Windows and Linux. The move to Apple is "a matter of completing our cross-platform story," he said.

But at least for now, the Apple chapter of that tale may be brief.

A recent Forrester Research survey found that the percentage of enterprise users running Apple MacBook operating systems grew threefold in 2007 to 4.2 percent, but concluded that "uptake remains limited to enthusiasts and small workgroups."

The new Apple MacBook runtime includes all the features present in Curl's runtimes for Windows and Linux, including support for audio, 2-D and 3-D graphics and animation, and a compiler that transforms applications built with Curl into native code for maximum performance.
However, Curl's IDE isn't yet supported to run on Apple MacBookintosh, meaning developers who prefer to work on those Apple MacBookhines will have to wait. "That's certainly a direction we're heading. The [runtime] development was ahead of the IDE development," Monson-Haefel said. "We're looking at it slowly and at what our customer demand is."

The company's move to support Apple MacBookintosh has two interesting angles, said Redmonk analyst Michael Coté.

"Curl is going for being the enterprise RIA player, sort of trying to niche itself out of competing with [Microsoft's] Silverlight and Adobe. The thing is that their platform is ostensibly ready and mature, but they don't have the brand power of Adobe and Microsoft.

"Given that they want to be the enterprise RIA people, their support of Apple MacBooks is interesting because it implies that they see a sizable enough use of Apple MacBooks in the enterprise to make money off it -- or see growth in the near term therein," he added. "Most people wouldn't consider Apple MacBooks an 'enterprise' deployment space and, thus, a platform to support. Now, developers of RIAs, sure, that's a whole other story. But users is something slightly new."

Also, Curl's cross-platform emphasis should play well as the RIA market evolves, Coté predicted.

"At this point in the RIA wars, attracting developers is the big battle, and Windows-only toolchains ... are at a disadvantage, as would be OS X or Linux only," he said.

While much smaller than those vendors, Curl has about 300 "large enterprise deployments" and its platform, now in version 6.0, is more mature, Monson-Haefel said.

Curl, maker of a framework for building rich Internet applications, said Tuesday that it is now supporting Apple MacBookintosh environments, citing "rapidly increasing penetration" of the platform in enterprises.

Mio newly-producted camera with GPS and Clarion Shows Internet-Enabled GPS

Car audio and navigation maker Clarion has unveiled a new prototype of its handheld mobile Internet navigator device that's due to be launched later this year.

Now, this isn't a completely novel idea. We've seen GPS modules that you can add to cameras, such as the Pharos Trips & Pics and the Sony GPS-CS1KA, to get this functionality. However, Mio's device aims to do away with extra accessories and let you carry just one do-it-all gadget. No word on when the camera will be available and even if it will make its way to the States, but perhaps SiRF Technology founder Kanwar Chadha's prediction is coming true? Will 2008 be the year where we see major manufacturers integrate GPS into digital cameras? And do you think this is a good idea?

It was on show at the booth of parent-company Hitachi at the Computex trade show in Taipei. Computex, one of the world's largest IT shows, opened on Tuesday.

An earlier version of the prototype was shown at CES in Las Vegas in January and at a recent Intel news conference in Tokyo.

The greatest difference between the latest prototype and previous model is its shape, which has gone from being rectangular to trapezoidal where the top edge is shorter than the bottom edge.

The machine, which is based on Intel's Centrino Atom platform, has a 4.8-inch screen, runs Linux and comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. It will be launched in North America later this year and in Europe in 2009 and will cost around US$700, said Noriko Ueda, assistant manager of Clarion's marketing group. A more expensive version with built-in 3G (third-generation) wireless capability is also planned, she said.

Mio Technology is hoping to take GPS to new places, more specifically, beyond the car. At Computex 2008 (Asia's largest technology trade show), Mio unveiled a new concept product called the "PND (portable navigation device) camera" that integrates a GPS radio into a digital camera. Details and specs are pretty light at the moment, but according to GPS Business News, the device will feature a 3.5-inch touch screen and with the two integrated technologies, the camera will be able to geotag your photos.

In addition to GPS (Global Positioning System) navigation it comes with digital TV, a Web browser, e-mail client, Flash player, image viewer, PDF (Portable Document Format) viewer and quick access to Google Earth, YouTube and MySpace.

Acer Acer Aspire One Joins Mininote Parade and Sales of New Mini-Notebook computer

The new Aspire one is priced beginning at $379, although Acer did not release additional details on whether or not a premium would be charged for Windows. The device can be configured with either Windows XP Home or Linux, and rival Asus has penalized consumers for choosing Windows by forcing them to buy an Eee PC with a less sophisticated hard drive.

Buyers will also have a choice of battery. The standard battery on Aspire one can run for about three hours, but an optional six-cell battery can give up to eight hours of power.

The Aspire one is equipped with the Intel Atom processor, Linpus Linux Lite or Windows XP Home, and comes with 512 Mbytes or 1 Gbyte of RAM memory installed. Storage options include either an 8-Gbyte SSD or an 80-Gbyte internal hard drive. The Aspire one includes an 8.9-inch CrystalBrite LED backlit display.

It measures 9.8 inches x 6.7 inches x 1.14 inches and weighs a little more than two pounds, Acer said.

For communication, Acer said that the mininote comes standard with 802.11b/g WiFi, but will also be configured with 3G connectivity and and WiMAX later this year, most likely after the delayed "Montevina" Centrino platform hits the streets. The Aspire one also includes a Webcam. A 5-in-1 card reader is included, with a technology that apparently turns a memory card into an additional memory cache.

The Aspire one will be released in sapphire blue, seashell white, golden brown and coral pink.

Beware, however, for the Aspire one also comes with shovelware: dditional software such as OpenOffice 2.3, one Mail, Messenger, Acer eRecovery Management, Acer Launch Manager, Adobe Reader, McAfee Internet Security Suite, and Microsoft Office Trial 2007 are also preinstalled, Acer said.

The Aspire one joins the Acer's upgraded Eee PCs and the MSI Wind as new notebooks announced at this year's Computex. Aspire one will ship globally and hit store shelves in July.

AMD plans response to Intel, VIA mini laptop computers Chips as Manufacture

The Fusion chips will be made using SOI, Bergman said.

Much speculation has surrounded Advanced Micro Devices' manufacturing plans for its upcoming Fusion family of processors and whether these chips could be produced under contract. But a senior executive said on Tuesday that AMD plans to manufacture the first chips itself.

The first Fusion processors will be made at AMD's chip plant in Dresden, Germany, said Rick Bergman, senior vice president and general manager of AMD's Graphics Products Group, during an interview.

"There are some lower-end models that we're considering that we might use the fabless model for," Bergman said, indicating the production of these chips would be outsourced.

Due in late 2009, Fusion chips will combine processor cores, a memory controller and graphics cores on a single piece of silicon. Current AMD processors have the processor cores and memory controller on the same chip. Adding a graphics core to these chips is technically challenging, in part because AMD's existing microprocessors and graphics chips are made using different technology.

AMD's graphics chips are made by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. using a bulk CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) process, while the processors are made by AMD and Chartered Semiconductor using SOI (silicon-on-insulator) technology.

These systems should start appearing in the second half of 2008 and will be priced between approximately $300 and $400, matching the cost of most lower-priced micro laptop computers. Whether any such systems will be available in the US is unknown, as most major PC makers including Acer, ASUS, Dell, and HP are all using either Intel or VIA processors.

AMD is working with PC builders to offer its own answer to a slew of micro laptop computers based on Intel chips, visitors to AMD's booth at Computex have found today. While specifications are unclear, a number of companies are building systems using low-power Turion 64 processors as well as AMD's integrated ATI Radeon for graphics. Systems will follow a similar pattern and use Linux with lower-end systems and Windows on some higher-end models. One company, Malata, has been identified as making one system and will include an unknown AMD chip as well as 1GB of memory, an 8.9-inch screen and Linux. A high-end system from an unspecified manufacturer shrinks the screen to seven inches but boosts the resolution to 1024x600 (incorrectly identified as 1280x600), uses a 60GB or 80GB hard drive, and runs Windows XP.

Intel Will Ease Atom Shortage Soon, MSI will use Intel Atom CPU

Acer is in weekly talks with Intel about the shortage, Wong said.

"If Intel can solve it by October, then no problem," Shen said.

The Intel Centrino Atom Processor Technology, which Intel launched Tuesday at the Computex exhibition in Taipei, is designed for low-cost laptops and desktops. Encouraged by the success of Asustek's Eee PC, more hardware makers have designed new products based on the chips.

The Windows version features XP Home, a 1.6GHz Intel Intel Centrino Atom Processor Technology CPU on the Intel 945GMS chipset, 1GB of 667MHz memory, and an 80GB hard drive. The laptop weighs 2.6 pounds and has a 10-inch display, which is LED backlit with a 1024x600 resolution. Bluetooth and 802.11b/g Wi-Fi are onboard, as is a 1.3-megapixel Webcam, three USB ports, and a 4-in-1 media card reader. The 6-cell battery is rated to run for 5.5 hours.

On Monday, Asustek Computer CEO Jerry Shen said shortages and delays of Intel Centrino Atom Processor Technology will not seriously affect Eee PC shipments, but warned that the issue could grow more serious as the important pre-holiday shipment season starts later in the year.

The current shortage of Intel Centrino Atom Processor Technology processors did not hurt the launch of Acer's Aspire one laptop, but the company is watching developments closely, said Jim Wong, senior corporate vice president at the Taiwanese computer vendor.

The Intel Centrino Atom Processor Technology shortage was caused by this high level of demand for the chips from hardware makers, said Sean Maloney, executive vice president and general manager of Intel's Sales and Marketing Group, in an interview.

"We've got four 300-millimeter fabs, so we can really hose this stuff out," Maloney said, referring to Intel manufacturing plants that use 300mm silicon wafers to make chips. Around 2,500 Intel Centrino Atom Processor Technology processors can be made on a single 300mm wafer.

Microsoft Extends XP Deadline for Low-Cost PCs, Asustek Aims to Keep it

Microsoft has further extended the life of Windows XP so that computer makers can include the operating system on low-cost desktop PCs, the company announced at the Computex trade show on Tuesday.

The Eee PCs 901 is on the market in Taiwan as of Tuesday, while the Eee PCs 1000H will be out on June 13 and the Eee PCs 1000 will come out sometime in early June, according to Asustek. Later this month, the three new Eee PCs will be available in Hong Kong, Japan and Korea as well as other locations in Asia.

Later this year, the new mini-notebook computers will be available in Europe, an Asustek representative said. No time was given for North or South America.

Several new rivals to Asustek Computer's popular Eee PCs low-cost have launched so far at Computex this year, but Asustek fired back on Tuesday with new models based on Intel's Atom microprocessor.

Atom was designed to be a low-cost chip aimed at this growing segment of mini-notebook computers, which have 7-inch to 10-inch screens, weigh less than 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) and connect wirelessly to the Internet. The microprocessor is also easy on batteries.

Asustek has taken full advantage of Atom's power efficiency in its new Eee PCs 901, Eee PCs 1000 and Eee PCs 1000H mini-notebook computers, putting six-cell batteries in each for eight hours of running time. The company used Intel Celeron M processors in past Eee PCs.

The main difference in the new notebook computers is size. The Eee PCs 901 has an 8.9-inch screen, weighs around 1 kilogram and has a small keypad. The Eee PCs 1000 and Eee PCs 1000H carry 10-inch screens, larger keyboards and weigh between 1.3 to 1.5 kilograms, depending on whether a user chooses an SSD (solid state drive) or HDD (hard disk drive) for storage. The H in Eee PCs 1000H stands for HDD, the 80G byte storage drive inside.

The Eee PCs 1000 and 1000H are also a bit more expensive. While prices will vary by market, in Taiwan, the Eee PCs 1000, which runs on Linux only and carries a 40G byte SDD, costs NT$19,988 (US$662), compared to NT$18,988 (US$628) for the 1000H, which comes with either Linux or Windows XP. The Eee PCs 901 also comes with Linux or Windows XP, carries 1G byte of DRAM and either a 12G byte or 20G byte SSD for storage. It costs NT$16,988 (US$562).
